The psychological term for this is negativity bias.
Evolutionarily speaking, the reason we have a negativity bias is that our ancestors who fretted and worried at the end of the day-wondering where that pack of hyenas was yesterday and where
most of the dangers we face nowadays are threats to our sense of self, it is self-compassionate to correct the negativity bias because it distorts real- ity.
The negativity bias is especially strong toward ourselves.
